If you have been to a restaurant lately, you know it can be tricky to find something healthy on the menu. Finding something that has been cooked in a healthy fat is even tougher. Two local establishments are trying to make finding a good meal a little easier.
Little India Express is a relatively inexpensive gem in Tacoma’s Freighthouse Square. Don’t let the fast food cafeteria atmosphere deter you; the chef, Raj, serves delicious Indian cuisine made with fresh ingredients. The house special is a lovely salmon curry. I also recommend the paneer, a spicy slow-cooked spinach dish.
Each dish is made fresh to order and Raj goes well out of his way to accommodate any dietary restrictions. On my last visit I was on a strict diet that involved the removal of all grains, vinegar and dairy. Even with all of these obstacles, I was served a creamy curry dish of salmon and fresh vegetables and a salad with a specially made olive oil and herb dressing. I will definitely be going back.
If you are looking for somewhere to go for a ladies night out or date luncheon, Garden to Gourmet is a fun choice. Located in Yelm, the restaurant is farm-to-table, serving locally grown, organic produce and poultry and grass-fed beef. Owner Patrick Leblanc and chef Daniel Juarez offer a nice range of fresh products with original twists. They even have kombuncha on tap.
While the kids menu seemed typical at first glance, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that each kid’s meal came with a fresh, organic salad rather than french fries. My kids are pretty adventurous eaters and both chose the veggie burger from the regular menu to try. My husband ordered a ham sandwich and I had the roasted beet and goat cheese salad. The food was good and the atmosphere fun and relaxed (live music can be enjoyed on weekend evenings). However, due to the price of this outing I will not take the kids again anytime soon. It is a pricy restaurant, which makes sense given the quality of the ingredients. However, this adds up quickly for a family of four.
I would love to go back and enjoy one of Garden to Gourmet’s dinner specials on a date night with my husband or evening with friends. This is the type of place where you want to linger and enjoy the atmosphere and a freshly prepared meal.
